BACKGROUND:Circle of security (COS) is a group of attachment based parental guidance interventions designed to promote sensitive and affective communication with the child, increasing the child`s sense of security and self-understanding. This article evaluates Circle of Security (COS) Intensive intervention (COS-I), which is a therapeutic intervention targeting families with moderate to high risk. Implementation of the intervention in Norway is organized by Tilknytningspsykologene in co-operation with Circle of Security International in USA.
METHOD:This review is based on systematic literature search in the databases Embase, Medline og Psykinfo, , ‘Cochrane, NORA, SweMed+, Cambell, NICE, Blueprint, CEBC, Metodguiden, Cinahl, google scolar og EIF. We have also received information about the intervention from the Norwegian provider. Literature searches and other information obtained were reviewed to identify Nordic effect studies, international systematic reviews and other Norwegian studies of the intervention.
RESULTS:The results in this paper consist of assessments of the intervention’s description, available studies and description of implementation routines. COS-I is considered to be satisfactorily described with a good theoretical foundation. There are no Nordic studies where the effect of the intervention has been described, but systematic reviews summarize positive effects from several independent pre-post studies. The studies do not provide certain knowledge about whether the intervention is effective, but suggest that it may have positive effects. There is thus an indication that COS-I can promote secure attachment.
CONCLUSION:COS-I is classified at evidence level 3 as an intervention with some evidence of effect.
