The Meanings and Makings of Games: Eludamos Doctoral Consortium at CEEGS 2023

The editorial board of Eludamos: Journal for Computer Game Culture and the organizing committee of CEEGS have teamed up to arrange a doctoral consortium during this year’s conference on October 19-21, 2023, at Macromedia University in Leipzig, Germany. The consortium has the theme The Meanings and Makings of Games and will take place on the first day of the conference on Oct. 19.

We would like to invite doctoral students to submit abstracts for papers or chapters (4-600 words not counting references) by May 15, 2023. Please submit your abstracts to all the following email addresses: holger.potzsch@uit.no, kristine.jorgensen@uib.no, and mluethe1109@zedat.fu-berlin.de. You will be notified about the results by June 1.

Based on our assessment of the abstracts, we will invite a limited number of contributors to develop full draft papers of 4-5.000 words (word count excl. references) and submit these to the organizing committee by October 1, 2023. The papers need not be finished but should give a clear impression of which theories and methods are used, for what purpose, and what findings can be expected. We accept papers using methods from the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Preferably, manuscripts should reflect the conference theme and take a critical perspective, i.e. we will give preference to papers avoiding a merely instrumental outlook on game design and development.

During the one-day doctoral consortium, we will dedicate 30 minutes to each accepted paper. All drafts will be distributed to all registered participants at least two weeks prior to the event, so we will assume everyone has read every paper.

During the consortium, initially authors will briefly contextualize their papers (targeted publication channel, degree of completion, specific weaknesses, ...). To save time, we will refrain from summarizing content. Each paper is then commented upon by two opponents – one peer doctoral candidate and one senior scholar. We aim at constructive and inclusive feedback. The remaining time is used for open plenum discussions.

The main purpose of the feedback is to help the authors develop papers suitable for review processes in academic journals. After the event, the editorial board of Eludamos will contact selected authors and ask them to submit finalized versions of their papers for review at the journal.
