Abstract

Description: The KIDSCREEN is a questionnaire to assess health-related quality of life. It was developed in international collaboration managed from German colleagues. The Norwegian version was translated by Haraldstad, Eide and Helseth in 2006, and is available for use in Norway. The target group of the questionnaire is children and adolescents from 8 to 18 years. The instrument exists in there different versions, both for children and for parents consisting of 52, 27, and 10 items. A manual and a SPSS-syntax-file is available from the KDSCREEN group. The questionnaire can be used free of charge, but the KIDSCREEN group should be contacted before use.
Literature search: Our systematic literature search identified four publications in which the KIDSCREEN was applied to a Norwegian sample. Four investigations based on Swedish data could be included, but none from Denmark.
Psychometrics: Reliability in terms of Cronbach’s alpha for the 10 scales of the 52-item version and of the 10-item version were good to excellent. Content validity was established by satisfactory criterion-related validity.
Konklusjon: The psychometric properties of the Norwegian KIDSCREEN for children are sufficiently investigated. Its construct validity is supported by analyses of the literature and analyses by experts from the field, as well as by confirmatory factor analyses. Genuine Norwegian norms do not exist, but the psychometric properties of the KIDSCREEN indicate that this instrument can be recommended for measuring quality of life in children and adolescents from the general population as well as in clinical populations.
