About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Nordlyd is published by the Linguistics section of the Department of Language and Culture at the University of Tromsø, in collaboration with the University Library. Nordlyd publishes articles on topics in the academic field of linguistics with a connection to the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway, including but not limited to work by scholars at UiT and papers stemming from workshops and conferences at UiT.

All papers are peer-reviewed in a blind reviewing process. Papers published here are almost exclusively original (i.e., not previously published), but contributors are at liberty to publish their articles elsewhere at a later date. The editorial committee is appointed by the board of the Department of Linguistics. The journal is open access (free of charge to both authors and consumers), and has been electronic only since number 31, which was published in 2003.

The usual language of the journal is English but articles are occasionally published in other languages which are used in the Linguistics section of the Department of Language and Culture.

Peer Review Process

All papers are reviewed anonymously in a standard double-blind procedure by reviewers (one or more) who are not also of the editorial staff of the journal.

Academic Ethics

Authors are expected to abide by the standard ethical practices in the field, for example regarding authorship (every person listed as an author has made a substantial contribution to the paper, along the lines laid out in the Vancouver guidelines, and AI cannot be an author; if there are multiple authors then the nature and extent of their respective contributions is noted) and intellectual property (sources must be cited appropriately) and data sharing (following industry practice regarding data sharing; contributors are encouraged to upload their data to TROLLing).

Reviewers are likewise required to abide by the standard ethical practices for the field. In particular, reviewers must declare any conflict of interest at the earliest possible stage, and must submit professionally objective reviews. Also, reviewers acknowledge that the content of a manuscript being reviewed is available only to the reviewer and only for review and therefore must not be used in any other way before publication and must not be uploaded to an AI that may absorb it as background knowledge.

A published article is a final document and changes are not normally made after publication. However, if an error is discovered which substantially impacts the content of the published work, an erratum may be published, but only in consultation with the author(s). In cases of fraud, an article may be retracted after a substantial review procedure involving the author(s).

Complaints and appeals may be directed to the editor or editors for the relevant issue, or to the journal editors.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

The journal has no article submission charges or article processing charges.

Authors retain copyright to all versions of a manuscript, including the published version. Authors are free to make their submitted versions (preprints) or accepted manuscripts (postprints, manuscripts after peer review) openly available (e.g. in open repositories, websites, or personal webpages); Nordlyd's DOI link to the published article should be provided.

Authors retain copyright to the published version and are free to republish it, given that Nordlyd is acknowledged as the place of first publication, with a proper bibliographic reference, including DOI.

The journal is normally published once a year, with additional issues in some years, often correlated with workshops and conferences held in Tromsø.
