Abstract

This is not the most recent article on this program. Updated article: https://doi.org/10.7557/25.7433

Background: This article is a review of current knowledge of the effects of the Adolescent Coping with Depression Course (ACDC) (DU – Mestringskurs for ungdom). It is a revision of a previous review (Kvello, 2013), and updated according to the new classification criteria in Ungsinn (Martinussen m. fl., 2016). ACDC is a 10-session intervention for adolescents, 14-20 years old, with increased levels of depressive symptoms, or with mild to moderate depression. The intervention is developed by Trygve Børve, and Fagakademiet and Rådet for psykisk helse are the purveyors of ACDC. The purpose of this article is to examine whether the intervention is effective when used in ordinary practice in Norway.

Method: The following databases were searched to find articles about the intervention: Embase, Medline and Psycinfo, NORART Cochrane, Cristin, NORA, SCOPUS and SweMed, NREPP, NICE and Bluprint.

Results: The results include outcome of the literature search, and assessments of quality of the description, methodological quality of the research, and implementation quality. In addition, the outcomes of the effectiveness study are summed up. The intervention is considered to be well described through a detailed manual and several other documents. The measure has good theoretical and empirical basis through cognitive behavioral therapy. The literature search resulted in two Nordic studies, one uncontrolled pre-post study with measurements pre-post and at 6 months follow-up and one qualitative study evaluating satisfaction with the intervention for a subsample of the youth. The effectiveness study showed positive outcomes for the youth who received ACDC, with additional improvement at follow-up. However, the study was conducted with an unsatisfactory methodological quality, which challenges the interpretation of the results. The intervention has a system to ensure implementation quality, albeit no systematic monitoring of quality assurance is developed.

Conclusion: The intervention is based on a well-founded theory, and is well described in several documents including a detailed manual. The aims and target groups are well defined. The intervention satisfies the requirements for some levels of evidence. However, studies with more robust methodological rigor are necessary in order to conclude that the intervention has a stronger evidence of efficacy. Based on Ungsinn’s criteria the Adolescent Coping with Depression Course was classified at level 3: interventions with some documentation of effect.
