Abstract

Background: This article is a review of the effects of the Edinburgh Supportive Counselling Intervention in Norway.  This article is a revision of a previous review of the same intervention (Reedtz, 2012), but it has been revised according to the new scientific criteria for classification in Ungsinn. The intervention is an individualized intervention for pregnant women and new mothers. The intervention consists of two parts where the first step is completing the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), followed by a short session with a professional counselor about the assessment. The second step is follow-up supportive counselling sessions between the mother and a health care nurse  about the mothers’ mental health.

Method: This review was based on a systematic literature search of the databases Embase, Medline og Psykinfo, NORART Cochrane, Cristin, NORA, SCOPUS and SweMed. Two articled were included.

Results: The results include a summary of the description of the intervention, existing effect studies, quality of research methods, and implementation. The intervention is described in the literature, and the aims and target groups are adequately defined. The Edinburgh Supportive Counselling Intervention is based on a well-founded theory for some of the mechanisms for change in the intervention. Two Norwegian studies that had examined the effects of the intervention were included in the review. Both used a quasi-experimental design with a comparison group and pre-post assessments. The studies had an unsatisfactory methodological quality based on the Ungsinn classification criteria. There was one follow-up study. The intervention had an inadequate system for quality assurance and implementation.

Conclusion: Based on Ungsinn’s criteria the Edinburgh Supportive Counselling Intervention was classified at level 3 – interventions with some documentation of effect.
