Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, DOI numbers or URLs for the references have been provided in the form of clickable links.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Manuscripts submitted to Målbryting should not have been previously published or under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Format

Manuscripts should be submitted in Word-format and should not contain any author information.

Anonymisation

When referencing own work, use "NN (year)" in running text and a similar entry without the title in the references.

Style

Manuscripts should be in Times New Roman, 12-point font with double line spacing. The title should be as short and informative as possible, in Times New Roman with 14-point font. Right and left margins should be 2,5 cm and justified. The recommended upper limit for manuscripts is 8,000 words including tables, illustrations, figures, notes and references (for book reviews and review-articles, see separate entry below).

Use indentation for new paragraphs.

There are two levels of section headings: the first level is bold 12-point font and the second level is italics 12-point font. Section headings should be numbered. Do not use a full stop between the section number and the text of the heading. Emphasis should be marked with italics, not bold. Do not use comments, text boxes, or track changes.

Abstract

Manuscripts should have an abstract in English and a Scandinavian language of 200–300 words that should be placed between the title and the introduction.

Keywords

Manuscripts should include 5–8 corresponding keywords in English and a Scandinavian language that should be placed below the abstract.

Citations and notes

Shorter citations (shorter than 40 words) should be enclosed in double quotes: “…”. Citations longer than 40 words should not be enclosed in double quotes, but be indented with a blank line above and below the citation followed by the reference.

Use footnotes, not endnotes. The use of notes should be limited. Number the footnotes consecutively and place the number after any punctuation. If a footnote is required for further information, place it directly after the article heading.

In-text references and bibliography

From the 2021-volume onward, Målbryting uses the APA6 standard for in-text references and bibliography. Further reference formatting information can be found on the website for the Norwegian APA manual. Note that EndNote styles are available in this manual.

DOIs and URL addresses

If available, every text reference must include the DOI as part of the entry in the references. If applicable, make sure that the DOI refers to the referenced chapter in the edited volume and not the whole edited volume.

If a web-based reference does not have a DOI, please provide a full URL address.

DOI numbers and URL addresses must be formed as clickable links.

Peer review

Contributions are read by at least two reviewers using double blind review. The reviewers have about 4 weeks to complete their work.

Book reviews and review-articles

From the 2021-volume onward, Målbryting publishes book reviews. Book reviews have an upper recommended limit of 2,000–2,500 words. A book review should mainly be an evaluation of the different qualities of the book with particular reference to sociolinguistic research and/or teaching and not just be a neutral description of the content.

Review articles have an upper recommended limit of 6,000 words and will be subjected to peer review.

Please contact the editors if you are planning to write a book review or a review-article.

Reviews

Reviews of books, dissertations etc. (non-peer-reviewed).
