Abstract

In this article I will examine choice as an existential concept in Dag Solstad’s novel Professor Andersen’s night (1996) and in The Fall (1956) by Albert Camus. The night before Christmas Day professor Andersen witnesses the murder of a woman, but he refrains from calling the police. One night he passes a bridge in Paris, Clamence is the witness to a woman committing suicide. He also refrains from notifying someone. To avoid notifying is a violation of our humanistic values. I will examine the justification for the choice, the consequences of the choice and how the characters reconcile themselves with their choice. In addition, I will use The Myth of Sisyphus (1942) to shed light on some aspects of the novels. One result of the study has proved that the main characters expose themselves to a moral fall.
