Health-Related Quality of Life in Individuals with Current or Past Bladder Cancer

Purpose: To examine health-related quality-of-life (HRQOL) in people with bladder cancer, as well as gender differences and make comparisons with the general population.
Method: Members of two patient associations were invited to answer an electronic questionnaire with clinical/demographic data and HRQOL. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) was used to measure HRQOL.
Results: Of 445 invited members, 146 (33%) responded. Significant differences between men and women were found on physical function, cognitive function, fatigue and diarrhoea, with the women reporting greater difficulties. The largest difference between bladder cancer patients and the general population was seen in social and role functioning.
Conclusion: Several aspects of HRQOL are associated with bladder cancer and its treatment. The patient group performs worse than cut-off values in various functions and symptoms, which clinicians should be aware of while caring for people with bladder cancer.
